Last night we saw elk after the locals told us there were no elk left in Boxley Valley. Boxley Valley is protected by all parties to remain untouched. The barns that are here will always be here. The people who own the fields will always own the fields. It's truly preserved. I stayed in bed until 9:30 today. The family went hiking a two mile trail, but Nic and I stayed to clean and lounge around. We walked down to the BOC Store to return movies and picked up two more: The Prestige and Mama Mia. I know watching movies isn't quite aligning with a life of go, but I think even on a vacation in the mountains there should be down time from hiking trails and river swimming holes. Today we found another lovely spot to swim in, about two miles downriver from the Ponca Access. After sleeping in late, the day felt short, but I enjoyed this hole in a different way. There was a set of rapids you could body surf, which is my favorite thing about rivers period. There were rocks to jump off of and even rocks to lay out on. The hole was more secluded for the time we were there. Also, Nic and his dad had to save a cat with a bag on his head and it was the cutest, most pathetic thing I've ever seen. More updates and pictures to come, when I have more service!

River day! We left Ponca around 8:15 this morning. It should've been earlier but I had a little slip up. Once we got to the outfitter, we had kayaks waiting on us. Let me tell you, I love kayaking now! I had a midsize D blue and white splotched kayak for the majority of the river. We rode 8 miles or so in 4 hours. Nic and I jumped from different rocks and had fun with the family all day. The river is lower than normal, making the water slower and the whole trip more lazy. We paddled a lot and I got stuck twice, which I considered pretty good! Side note: Nicholas does not like kayaking too much. At a calmer part of the river I turned back just in time to see his kayak tip a bit too far to the right and with a skaploosh there was no more Nicholas above water. There were caves to boat and swim under but no waterfalls. We are lunch along the river. More amazing sandwiches. Later, we're either going on a second hike or to find another water hole. I wanted to blog now while I still had service! This vacation is different than anything I've ever really done. While I've traveled to Washington D.C. by myself and seen America with my family, I'm with a new group of people who I mesh with. I feel like I'm road tripping with my best friends rather than my family. Also, sharing my journey with essentially all my friends and family back home (essentially the whole world) in detail is new too. I can't wait to have all of the pictures to show you folks. |
