Last weekend I visited Detroit, MI for the third time with the Shell Eco Marathon. Considering this is my blog for travel and not my school involvement, I wont ramble on about the competition, just the adventures.
We stayed in Downtown Detroit, and obviously I didn't get shot for all you bumbling basics who told me "don't get shot!" when I told them I was going to Detroit. The food on this trip was amazing. We had Thai food on night one. The following night we ate at Mark Whalberg's restaurant Whalburgers in Greek Town, followed by some amazing Cold Stone Creamery. Another night I ate at a BBQ joint where you choose your favorite sauce to add to your own meal. On the final day, we ate at Townhouse for lunch with some Eco Car alum. When I tell you I had the best BLT w/ avocado and a cinnamon roll for dessert. I cannot express to you how amazing either of these things tasted. My mouth is watering thinking about this food... 10/10 would recommend Townhouse, but it was rather expensive. (Thanks again to our alum that paid for our meals. You guys rock.) For sleeping arrangements, we camped in a large room in the Cobo Center with hundreds of students from across North and South America. When you came down the escalator, you could look across the large hall and see hundreds of tents big and small. It was really quite amazing to see. There are other teams who stay in hotels, but there were over 1,200 participants in the Cobo Center, not to mention the thousands of spectators that poured in for the #MakeTheFuture festival that Detroit paired with our competition. It really is an honor to compete in the Eco Marathon with all the brilliant minds of my generation. I met several cool people this year at the Eco Marathon. There are always familiar faces that I get to catch up with. In past years I've met my twin from North Dakota, Jay Leno, Roger Penske, and Shell Communication personnel (that I'd love to work alongside of one day). My favorite, Melissa Cantwell just absolutely has my heart. She connects me to the people who make a difference in their industries! This year I met Mr. Charles "Chad" Holliday, who is chair of the Nomination and Succession committee within the Board of Directors at Shell. I was thrilled to speak with him momentarily before his commencement speech for the Eco Marathon to officially begin. As per usual, I'm attaching some photos!
