We traveled to Puerto Rico June 18-25 for a World Changers camp through First Baptist Church in Ruston. This is my third and final year to make this trip. We visited the El Yonque rain forest and of course, the beach. My favorite part about this trip is always the exposure that I get to the Spanish language. There are several laughs caused by miscommunication and rusty translations while on the island. My favorite memories from this trip include the late night turtle watching parties, rock jumping into the waterfalls, and the Puerto Rican food. While we didn't attend a turtle watching party, the party-goers could be heard from mine and Brister's bedroom in the front of the house. Essentially these people care so much about the hatching sea turtles that when they begin to hatch, they all gather around at a safe distance to escort them to the sea. Without the humans safe guarding them, the turtles are usually intercepted by birds or iguanas, limiting their chance of survival. How lucky we were to be on the island during this precious season. Also, I enjoy Puerto Rican music very much. The problem with this is I don't understand the lyrics. There were several days I would be dancing subtly on the roof while a car blaring music made its way by. Milo Maldanado would look at me funny and shake his head meaning "We don't dance to that music. It is no good." That happened a lot and I captured a laugh from Julio because of it. Several times I'd glance at Milo when I heard the music and say "Yo quiero bailo" ("I want to dance!") as he shook his head no Julio got a kick out of that. I also adored Joshua who constantly sang Drake songs and anything pop culture songs from the US. I'm very blessed to have friends on the island who I will never forget. Thank you, San Juan, Puerto Rico.
